Swaledale (The Wild North)
Including: Arkengarthdale
Famous Landscapes: Known as the narrowest and wildest of the dales. It is defined by its high-density stone field barns (laithes) and wildflower hay meadows around Muker.
Outdoor Adventure: A premier destination for the Coast to Coast Walk. The Buttertubs Pass provides a dramatic high-level road route connecting Swaledale to Wensleydale.
Iconic Landmarks & Heritage:
Richmond Castle: A dominant Norman fortress with one of Britain’s best-preserved keeps.
Tan Hill Inn: Located in Arkengarthdale, this is the highest pub in Great Britain (1,732ft).
Interesting Fact: The dale was once a global hub for lead mining; the scarred landscapes of Gunnerside Gill remain as industrial monuments.

Wensleydale (The Valley of Cheese and Castles)

Famous Landscapes: A broad, fertile valley known for its unique limestone terraces. It features Aysgarth Falls (a triple flight of waterfalls) and Semer Water, the largest natural glacial lake in the Dales.
Outdoor Adventure: Famous for low-level riverside walking and the “Salmon Leap” at Stainforth Force. The Wensleydale Railway offers heritage train rides through the lower valley.

Bolton Castle: A 14th-century fortress where Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned.
The Wensleydale Creamery: In Hawes, home to the world-famous cheese.
Jervaulx Abbey: A “great Cistercian abbey” in Lower Wensleydale, known for its atmospheric ruins.
Interesting Fact: It is the only major dale not named after its river (the River Ure); it takes its name from the village of Wensley.

Wharfedale & Littondale (The Picturesque Heartland)
Famous Landscapes: A classic U-shaped valley. It features Kilnsey Crag, a sheer limestone overhang popular with climbers. Littondale is a “hidden” side valley, widely considered the quietest in the park, with stunning scenery and charming villages.
Outdoor Adventure: Starting point of the Dales Way footpath. The river features The Strid, a notoriously dangerous narrow chasm where the entire River Wharfe is forced through a gap just feet wide.

Bolton Abbey: The 12th-century ruins of an Augustinian priory set in a vast country estate.
Grassington: The cobblestoned market town used as the filming location for All Creatures Great and Small.
Interesting Fact: Arncliffe in Littondale was the original setting for the TV soap Emmerdale (then Emmerdale Farm). The name Emmerdale is based Amerdale, the ancient Norse name for Littondale, with Arncliffe picked as it was seen to perfectly represent an authentic, unspoilt, and picturesque Yorkshire Dales village (as it still does to this day).

Malhamdale & Airedale (The Geological Wonder)
Famous Landscapes: Contains the most spectacular limestone geology in Europe. Malham Cove is a 230ft high curved cliff, and Gordale Scar is a massive hidden limestone gorge with two waterfalls.
Outdoor Adventure: Walking the limestone pavement atop the Cove (clints and grykes). Janet’s Foss is a woodland waterfall said to be home to a fairy queen.

Skipton Castle: One of the most complete and best-preserved medieval castles in England.
Interesting Fact: The limestone pavement at Malham Cove was featured in the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Ribblesdale (The Land of the Three Peaks)

Ribblehead Viaduct: A 24-arch masterpiece of Victorian engineering on the Settle-Carlisle Railway.
Hoffmann Kiln: A massive, rare industrial lime-burning kiln at Langcliffe.
Interesting Fact: The Settle-Carlisle Railway was nearly closed in the 1980s but was saved by one of the most successful rail protest campaigns in British history.

Famous Landscapes: Added to the National Park in 2016, this area features stunning limestone pavement, most notably at Great Asby Scar National Nature Reserve, the dramatic Wildboar Fell and the steep-sided valley of Mallerstang.
Outdoor Adventure: High-altitude walking with fewer crowds than the southern dales.

Pendragon Castle: Legend states this castle was built by Uther Pendragon, the father of King Arthur.
Smardale Gill Viaduct: A stunning Victorian structure now used as a walking route through a nature reserve.
Interesting Fact: The Westmorland Dales were part of the historic county of Westmorland, which disappeared in 1974 but was “reclaimed” by the National Park extension.
